We are the arctic adventurers - Amy and Michael.

It was nearly a decade ago that we made the decision to embark upon our first adventure. Amy had watched a travel programme about Iceland many years ago and had always wanted to plan a sub-Arctic experience (the far northern hemisphere was one of the few locations Amy didn’t get to experience whilst working for a trans-Atlantic airline) and Brian Cox’s Wonders of the Solar System convinced us to get us searching online for an Icelandic adventure.

We didn’t have a clue. There were all sorts of arrangements with a myriad of accommodation styles, organised tours and prices. And the Icelandic Krona just sounded really expensive. After a fair amount of deliberation, we opted for an organised tour via Secret Escapes. Being honest, we weren’t sure we’d done the right thing at first - did we want to go everywhere with the same people? Will it be really cold? Will our UK winter gear be good enough? Would most of our time be spent on a bus? Is this the kind of holiday young people take? Is four days enough? Is a two-centre stay a good move? Will there be anything to eat that isn’t rotten shark? Will we actually get to see the aurora?

It turned out that this kind of arrangement made for an incredible first experience of Iceland. Whilst we wouldn’t do it again, it gave us so many insights into places to visit, how to get there and how to make the best of our precious holiday time. All we knew is that we wanted to experience it all again.

This was the catalyst for many more trips to Iceland and Finland; we promised ourselves that we’d involve our family in our adventures, so the arrival of our three children has enabled us to experience things together (including our extended family and friends) that we’d have never thought possible, especially without a bumper budget. Our winter holidays are a family highlight with incredible memories and photographs keeping us going until the next time!

Whilst we can’t promise spectacular aurora displays and marriage proposals under the lights every time, what we can do is share our experiences and the lessons we’ve learned to help you make incredible memories as couples and families on a sensible budget, enabling you to have the kind of adventure that you may not have thought would be possible, especially with children.

If you have any questions or would like to suggest anything that would be helpful for us to cover, just get in touch!
