Top 5 Finnish experiences

Finnish Lapland

Spend a bit of time researching whether you'd like to stay in Rovaniemi (the capital of Lapland with a population of around 60,000) or if you'd prefer a more rural experience, taking into account the length of your stay and whether you'd like to drive whilst in Finland.

Either way, here are some recommendations for experiences you can enjoy around Rovaniemi:

Top 5 experiences

1.Reindeer safari

With prices starting at €40 for adults and €30 for children, you can have an authentic and rural reindeer safari experience, warming up with pancakes and hot drinks made over the fire in the kota.

Visit Tatuka for more details.

2. Husky sled adventure

Huskypoint is a family-owned company with over three decades of experience in Rovaniemi, offering dog sled adventures for individuals and groups along beautiful forest trails in the Sinettä area.

Prices start at €100 for children and €132 for adults.

Visit HuskyPoint for more details.

3. Outdoor cooking in a kota or laavu

In Finnish Lapland, a 'Kota' is a traditional tent of the Sámi - a wooden hut with a fire set inside where visitors can cook food and make hot drinks.

It's a perfect opportunity to get together with family and friends for food (especially sausages), hot drinks and your favourite tipple.

A 'kota' is different to a 'laavu"in that the latter is a tent - more like a tipi but less vertical. It's designed to be quickly assembled and dismantled.

4. Snowmobiling

This is one of those things that you may choose to do as a special experience - there's something spectacular about hitting speeds of 50kph/30mph across the vast frozen lakes of Lapland and along snow-covered forest trails.

Check out further details here.

5. Enjoying the great outdoors

Not everything you do in Finnish Lapland has to be extravagant or costly. There's something magnificent about enjoying the great outdoors, walking along forest paths, enjoying the beauty of nature along the way.

Don't forget

It's understandable that you will want to keep to a budget as it's possible to spend a lot of money on experiences like the above. Here are the best experiences that will cost you little or nothing:

  • Get outside for long walks in the wilderness

  • Make a snowman (if you can! The snow can be super fine)

  • Find out if anybody has reindeer nearby that you can visit and help to feed
